HARLINGEN - A San Antonio woman was injured in a one-car crash that killed four other persons in the Lower Rio Grande Valley was listed in poor condition Saturday at Valley Baptist Hospital here. The Department of Public Safety said a car missed a curve on U.S. 281 about 6:30 a.m. Saturday and smashed into two palm trees near Santa Maria, Tex. Hospitalized In the intensive care ward was Carol Haans, 22, Forest Hill.
The dead were Robert Charles Brooks, 20, of Harlingen, the driver; Benny Joe Crenshaw, 24, of Mercedes; Chris Murray, 22, of San Benlto; and Sharon Marie Celrich, 24, of Arlington.
Brooks worked for the anti-poverty agency in nearby Edinburg. The others were visiting him.
DPS investigators said there was a slight curve in the road and the driver did not make it around the curve, as if he were asleep when he entered it. The car glanced from one palm tree, hit another head on and spun around. Every-body was thrown out except the driver and a girl in the back seat. The two who remained in the car were killed. The injured girl was thrown out.
A DPS investigator speculated the car was not traveling more than 70 miles an hour.
